About IDU
Who We Are
A Global Force for Diplomacy
The International Diplomatic Union (IDU) is a formally constituted international organization dedicated to advancing the principles of diplomacy, fostering peaceful international cooperation, and strengthening relations among nations, institutions, and peoples across the globe.
Officially recognized within the European Union and headquartered in Belgium, the IDU operates with full legal standing as a registered entity under Belgian law and EU regulatory frameworks. This formal legal status distinguishes IDU as a legitimate, accountable, and transparent institution, subject to the governance standards and regulatory oversight of both Belgian national law and applicable EU frameworks.
Founded on the principles of multilateralism, inclusion, and institutional excellence, IDU brings together practitioners, policymakers, and academics from across the globe to shape a more equitable and peaceful world order.

Vision & Mission
Our Vision
A World United Through Diplomacy
IDU sees a future in which international institutions are strengthened, cross-border cooperation is the norm, and every nation — regardless of size or influence — has a voice in shaping the global agenda.
Our Mission
Building Bridges Across Nations
We are committed to advancing diplomatic excellence, promoting good governance, and cultivating leadership that is ethical, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all peoples.
Our Rationale
Why IDU Exists
In an era of increasing complexity — marked by geopolitical uncertainty, shifting power dynamics, and global crises that respect no borders — the world needs more than reactive diplomacy. It demands institutions that are forward-thinking, inclusive, and structurally equipped to develop the leaders of tomorrow. IDU was founded precisely to fill that gap.

What We Stand For
Our Core Values
they are the operational principles by which every IDU programme, decision, and partnership is judged.

Leadership
We cultivate leaders who are courageous, visionary, and deeply committed to serving the global community above personal or political interests.

Integrity
In diplomacy, trust is currency. IDU holds itself and its members to the highest standards of honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct in every interaction.

Collaboration
No nation or institution can solve today's challenges alone. Diverse perspectives and shared purpose yield solutions no single actor could achieve in isolation.

Sovereignty & Respect
We uphold the dignity and sovereign rights of all nations. IDU fosters dialogue grounded in mutual respect, ensuring every voice is heard.

Sustainability
Our programmes and governance frameworks emphasize long-term, sustainable approaches to international cooperation and policy development for future generations.

Excellence
From programmes to events, IDU is dedicated to the highest standard of quality — an institutional obligation to the diplomats and leaders we serve.
Our Journey
A History in the Making
A group of senior diplomats and former heads of state from across five continents convened to discuss the need for a new kind of global institution — one focused on diplomatic development, leadership cultivation, and institutionalized peer-to-peer knowledge transfer.
IDU was formally constituted and registered in the Kingdom of Belgium, with its founding charter signed by representatives of founding nations. The organization adopted its core Statutes and governance framework, and established its Brussels headquarters.
IDU opened its doors to diplomats and emerging leaders globally. Within the first three months, membership grew to represent nations across all regions of the world, spanning every inhabited continent.
IDU launched its first cohort of flagship programmes, including the Diplomatic Leadership Academy and the Global Governance Seminar Series — delivered in London, Geneva, and New York.
IDU hosted its inaugural Global Diplomacy Summit, bringing together over 200 members and guests for three days of high-level dialogue, workshops, and the adoption of the IDU Declaration on Diplomatic Excellence.
IDU continues to grow — expanding programmes to new regions, deepening partnerships with international institutions including the United Nations and EU bodies and building the infrastructure for a truly global diplomatic network.
