Today, the International Diplomatic Union joins the global community in commemorating the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes, established by the United Nations to honor the lives lost to these natural disasters, raise awareness on risk prevention and management, and support affected communities in coping with and mitigating the impacts of earthquakes. This day provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of international solidarity, humanitarian relief, and strengthening emergency preparedness and response systems.
Earthquakes are not merely natural events; they are challenges that threaten lives and communities, reminding us of the importance of investing in safety systems, emergency planning, and international cooperation to protect lives and reduce losses. This day underscores that solidarity and mutual assistance enhance resilience and enable communities to recover and build sustainable futures.
We honor the victims and their families, as well as emergency responders, humanitarian organizations, and volunteers who dedicate themselves with determination and perseverance to provide aid, document lessons learned, and improve disaster preparedness and response plans. Their commitment inspires the international community to strengthen collaboration, share expertise, and mobilize resources effectively.
In line with its mandate, the International Diplomatic Union remains committed to supporting programs and initiatives that enhance disaster preparedness, including workshops, training programs, partnerships with regional and international institutions, and community-driven initiatives aimed at raising awareness, empowering communities, and improving emergency plans and risk mitigation strategies.
Around the world, activities marking this day—including conferences, workshops, awareness campaigns, and community dialogue sessions—highlight the critical importance of disaster prevention, while supporting professionals and organizations that document initiatives and contribute to protecting lives and communities.
On this occasion, the IDU calls upon governments, international organizations, and civil society to reaffirm their commitment to honoring victims, strengthening disaster prevention and response systems, and promoting international solidarity to address natural hazards. Only through collaboration and collective effort can we lay the foundation for a safer and more resilient future for all.
